Please note that Sunset is structured to take new beginner sailors into its 'Diamond' Optimist fleet at the ages of 8 years. To start sailing in Sunset Diamond fleet they must be 8 years old by 31 August 2026.

If your child is 10 years old or older and looking to start sailing for the first time they will not be able to join our Diamond Beginner Fleet. Your child will need to be able to sail in the higher fleets for their age group and this will mean that they will need to already have attained sufficient competence to sail with that age group. Our ability to accept new joiners who are 10 years or older will also be dependent on our coaching capacity in the relevant fleet. Priority will be given to existing sailors who sailed with us in 2025. 

If your child is 10 years or older before 31 August 2026 and you are wanting them to start sailing in Sunset you are advised to contact Simon Cook on 07894 412644 or simon.cook@dabchicks.org before completing your application. 

The Diamond Fleet weekend sessions on 2nd / 3rd May at Mersea Boating Lake are key sessions for our new sailors.  We require all new Diamond sailors to attend these weekend sessions.
